Health and Safety Commitment
Providing a safe and healthy working environment for all.
We are committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, subcontractors, visitors, clients, and members of the public affected by our civil engineering activities in Nigeria. We work to prevent accidents, injuries, and occupational ill-health by identifying hazards, assessing risks, and implementing effective controls on every project.
We also ensure that each site maintains documented emergency procedures for fire, medical emergencies, structural or excavation collapse, contact with live services, and environmental incidents, with emergency contact details and clearly marked escape routes clearly displayed and readily accessible at all times.
Legal Framework and Standards in Nigeria
Our health and safety management system is designed to comply with Nigerian legislation, including the Labour Act, the Factories Act Cap F1 LFN 2004, the Employees Compensation Act 2010, and applicable state regulations.
We take guidance from the National Policy on Occupational Safety and Health, the National Building Code, relevant environmental regulations, and the Approved Code of Practice (ACOP) for construction health and safety issued by recognised professional bodies.
Roles and Responsibilities
Health and safety is a shared responsibility across our organisation and supply chain.
- Management provides leadership, resources, and clear objectives for health, safety, and welfare, and ensures this policy is implemented on all sites.
- Project and site managers ensure that risk assessments, method statements, permits, and site rules are in place and that work is properly supervised by competent personnel.
- Employees and subcontractors must follow safe systems of work, correctly use personal protective equipment (PPE), report hazards, incidents, and near misses, and avoid any act or omission that could endanger themselves or others.
Managing Construction Risks on Our Sites
Before starting work, we identify project-specific hazards and prepare written risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) for all significant civil engineering activities, including earthworks, excavations, concrete works, lifting operations, working at height, and working near services.
Control measures include traffic management plans, temporary works designs, safe excavation and shoring methods, edge protection, lock-out/tag-out procedures, and the use of suitable, well-maintained plant and equipment.
Key elements of our site management include:
- Site inductions for all workers and visitors, covering hazards, emergency procedures, site rules, and reporting channels.
- Enforcing mandatory PPE (such as helmets, safety boots, high-visibility clothing, gloves, and eye/respiratory protection as required) and task-specific safety requirements.
- Routine inspections, toolbox talks, and audits to monitor compliance, address unsafe acts or conditions, and reinforce a positive safety culture.
Welfare, Training and Worker Wellbeing
We provide welfare facilities in line with Nigerian legal requirements and good practice, including potable drinking water, toilets and washing facilities, rest areas, and, where appropriate, changing facilities. Our projects pay attention to occupational health risks such as noise, vibration, dust, manual handling, heat stress, and psychosocial factors, and we implement suitable controls to reduce exposure.
We ensure that workers receive appropriate training and instruction for their roles, including induction training, task-specific training, and supervision, so they understand the risks and the safe way to perform their work. Specialised activities, such as lifting operations, scaffolding, confined space work, and operation of heavy plant, are carried out only by trained and competent personnel.
